150 years of Brisbane fashion to be revealed

Date Monday, April 17th 2017, 4:12 PM Icon 102 Date 0

FASHION and textiles conservator and curator Michael Marendy will give a talk to ADFAS Noosa members that will unpack the story of how Brisbane women have dressed over the past 150 years.

During that time, the production of clothing has undergone massive changes due to advances in technology and changes in work practices.

These changes lead to what historians refer to as the "democratisation of clothing”: mass-produced clothing for all who could afford it.

During this period, the so-called important aspects of the industry - manufacturing, wholesale buying, distribution and retailing - remained predominately in the hands of men, while production, over the counter selling and consumption remained predominantly with women.

Mr Marendy completed an MSc (clothing and textiles) at the University of Alberta.

His doctoral thesis at Griffith University focussed on significant local dressmakers and designers.

He has worked for the Queensland Museum, Museum of Brisbane, Queensland Women's Historical Association and the Queensland Art Gallery.

In 1996, a Churchill Fellowship offered him time at the textile conservation laboratory at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

He presents conservation workshops and has stabilised garments and textiles within numerous public collections.

His lecture, titled Romance and Glamour: 150 Years of Dressing in Brisbane, is on Saturday, April 22, at 3.45 pm at St Mary's Church Hall in William St, Tewantin.
